Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance Updates
Vinton Town Council adopted the updated Zoning Ordinance at their meeting held on March 15, 2022. The updated ordinance will become effective on April 1, 2022.
After over three years of deliberating, collaborating, and strategizing with the Vinton Planning Commission, residents, business owners, and other professional organizations, the proposed zoning ordinance revisions are entering the final stages of review before adoption.
A joint work session of the Town Council and Planning Commission is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, in the Vinton Council Chambers located at 311 S. Pollard St., Vinton, VA 24179. All are welcome to come participate and provide feedback in this public meeting. Fact sheets that cover the major subject areas of the Ordinance being revised can be found below.
Please contact the Planning and Zoning Department at 540-983-0605 if you have questions about the work session or the pending ordinance revisions.
Background Information...
In 2018, the Town of Vinton was awarded a technical assistance grant from the Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI). The purpose of this grant was to propose revisions to the Town codes (zoning and subdivision) for the UDAs that have been identified in the Town. Relevant topics included adequate water and sewer, connections to the transportation network, and regulations that allow for Traditional Neighborhood Design (TND).
Expanding beyond the proposed changes identified during that grant cycle, Town staff and the Town of Vinton Planning Commission are in the process of conducting a complete and in-depth revision of both the Vinton Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Ordinance. Almost every section of the existing ordinances will be revised and improved during this process. After a year of extensive research and work sessions with the Town of Vinton Planning Commission and Town Staff, we find that it is the right time to transition to involving the community and receiving public feedback on all the major subject areas included in these revisions.
The major subject areas include the following:
- Signage Regulations
- Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)
- Homestays (AirBnB, Vrbo, etc.)
- Off-Street Parking Regulations
- Dimensional Regulations (setbacks, building height, etc.)
- Proposed New and Revised Use Regulations
- Landscaping, Buffering, and Screening Requirements
- Subdivision Ordinance Revisions
To facilitate this conversation and provide a means of giving feedback on these proposed revisions, fact sheets have been created for each of the major subject areas along with some online surveys to complete. The best way to complete this community involvement process is to first read the factsheet that covers the specific subject area in question, then complete the survey that coincides with it. If you would not prefer to complete a survey, you can email your comments or questions directly to vintoninfo@vintonva.gov.
If you are a property owner, business owner, or a resident of the Town of Vinton who would like to stay updated on this process and provide feedback to help us shape Vinton’s future, please email your name, address, business name (if applicable), and phone number(s).
