TOWN OF VINTON,
VIRGINIASTORMWATER QUALITY
INFORMATION
Stormwater runoff and pollutants from
most storm drains flow directly into our creeks, which in turn flow
into the Roanoke River. The pollutants in the stormwater runoff come
from many sources including: yard fertilizers, litter, automobile
fluids, pet wastes, soaps from washing cars at home, grass clippings
and other yard wastes, etc. These and other pollutants are harmful
to drinking water and aquatic life in creeks and in the Roanoke River.
Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
implemented the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
Under the NPDES, the Town of Vinton is required to apply for a Virginia
Pollution Discharge Elimination System (VPDES) permit from the Virginia
Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The VPDES permit must be
renewed every 5 years and requires the Town to take steps to improve
stormwater quality. Steps included in this permit are public outreach
and education about stormwater runoff, continuing to sweep Town streets,
increasing erosion and sediment controls that contractors must adhere
to during construction, etc.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT
STORMWATER
Did you know...
a sewer system and a storm drain system are
not the same?
These two systems are completely different. The water
that goes down a sink or toilet in your home or business flows to a
wastewater treatment plant where it is treated and filtered. Water that
flows down driveways and streets and into a gutter goes into a storm
drain which flows directly to a stream, creek, river, lake, and eventually
the ocean. This water may pick up pollutants along the way which are
never treated.
there are many types of pollutants which enter
storm drains?
Some common contaminants include motor oil, pesticides,
brake dust, pet wastes, paint, and household chemicals.
the effects of the storm drain pollutants
on our water can be harmful?
These pollutants can have harmful effects on drinking
water supplies, recreational use, and wildlife. Some very popular beaches
have even been closed because of contaminated stormwater.
there are ways you can prevent storm water
pollution?
By reading this web page and educating yourself on what
causes stormwater pollution you are on the right path to preventing
it.
Share this knowledge with others:
Don't dump waste in storm drains.
Keep yard clippings out of the street.
Dispose of household chemicals properly - follow
the directions on the package.
Clean up oil spills and fix leaking automobiles.
Sweep driveways clean - do not hose them down.
Plant trees - trees improve storm water quality by
preventing sediment from washing away with storm water.
Place trash in cans with lids to prevent it from
blowing away.
Clean up pet waste.
Wash cars over grassy areas instead of on driveways
to prevent soap from going into the storm drains, or take it to a
car wash.
Don't fertilize or apply weed killers to your lawn
before a forecasted rain shower that will wash the chemicals away.
